Self Reflection Part Two Perseverance - 1498 Words

SELF REFLECTION PART TWO PERSEVERANCE I made the decision to return to college twenty years later, wanting to become more employable. My husband coaxed me into pursue a bachelor’s degree. Sitting in college courses with people the same age as my oldest child was awkward. It is much harder to socialize as an older student with events my priorities are different. After a few quarters I was able to make a few connections and get into the pace. I’ve persevered through the last four years to be able to graduate, overcoming illness (that had me hospitalized and had long-term recovery), financial burdens, and the juggling of school, family and home. I am most proud that, I’ve worked 20 to 30 hours a week, gone to school full-time, and finished a degree in four years. SELF-REGULATION As a student with a learning disability, I have had to learn how to regulate myself to succeed in a college environment. Much of my strategy has been in learning to set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Reliable, Timely) goals. I usually do this the first week of the court unless I have the advantage of obtaining a class syllabus prior to the quarter. Then I will map out each courses assignments, tests, and learning objectives, and preferences (An example: if a teacher has a certain font, font size, and/or spacing). A question arises as to how governments have a role to play in private sector. The answer to this question is, in order to bring transparency in private sector businesses, there are certain legal enactments i.e. Employment relations Act 2004, Companies Act, Corporate Insolvency Law and many other legal rules for every purpose of public or private sector.   These enactments contain rules and regulations which can be referred whenever there is a requirement for fulfilling a provision. For instance Employment Relations Act 2004 states about employee and employer relations and how these have to be maintained which is required to be followed by both private sector and public sector, which reduces a number of conflicts and disputes that could occur without these legal rules. The relation of employee and employer is slightly a difficult task to manage with, and at one point of time, appears much easier depending on the situation.   However, every employee and employer have to be careful with the jobs being held with in respective organizations. Gregory views the Arians as misbelievers, he feels they are people who are against Church and the Christians ; like Clovis, for he was one time a truster of Paganism. Clovis was a adult male who believed in Pagan worship, although he had a sister and married woman who were devout Christians. Before Clovis became converted to Christianity, he would frequently clock destroy churches. He believed in his Pagan devotions and hence, he would steal from the churches, taking their most prized ownerships, like an pitcher. Clovis married woman would frequently clock seek to convert him that his Pagan Gods could non fit up to her God, the Christian God and would seek to do him change over to her religion. Clovis believed it was because of her religion that his boies had died. He believed if they were to have the Pagan beliefs in which he believed under his Gods the out semen would hold been different. It was non until Clovis was faced with a conflict ( Tolbiac ) that he realized he would necessitate aid and his Supreme beings were non abl vitamin E to make their occupation. During this conflict Clovis work forces were being annihilated. Upon winning the conflict of Tolbiac Clovis did what he had promised and he converted to Christianity, turning off all of his Pagan devotions. When Clovis converted, he did non experience that he was traveling to be able to do his followings give up their religion and follow in his transition. How Does Shakespeare Present the Theme of Love free essay sample

How Does Shakespeare Present The Theme Of Love in `Romeo And Juliet`? In the play `Romeo and Juliet` the writer William Shakespeare uses the theme of love as a main feature to push the story along. Presented are a plethora of variations of love including family love, true love and courtly love. This essay aims to analyse these three types of love chosen. Family love or loyalty is evident throughout the storyline. It is observed when Romeo discusses his depression with his cousin, Benvolio. Romeo describes love using the words `O loving hate†¦ feather of lead, bright smoke, cold fire, sick health [and] still-waking sleep`. Shakespeare uses the literary techniques of oxymoron’s to express Romeo’s confusion as he tries to elucidate what love is and convey that he is a man in pain, love-sick. In reply to Romeo’s repetitions of descriptions of smoke Benvolio says `[when] one fire burns out another’s burning`, meaning that he wishes for Romeo to find another woman to love as there are many other possibilities of love available, one that is tangible or at least one that will distract him from the woman he suffers from. We will write a custom essay sample on How Does Shakespeare Present the Theme of Love or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page He suggests `some new infection` to discard `the rank poison of the old`. Hoping that Romeo will find a love more fair that will end the characteristics Romeo is displaying of courtly love. Romeo knows he is `out of her favour where [he is] in love` yet due to the fact that he is displaying courtly love it does not matter that Rosaline is unattainable he still ponders over her without listening to Benvolio`s advice and offers for example to be a `doctrine` that will cure him of love. The care displayed by Benvolio is used by Shakespeare to show Romeo`s confusion and pain therefore leading the observer to feel for Romeo. It is also used to quicken the pace of the play, Benvolio`s advice starts Romeo`s recovery and the start of finding a new love. Another example of family loyalty is Tybalt. He is a Capulet and therefore when he notices Romeo, and Montague at the Capulet ball he becomes angry and says that he would like to `strike him dead`. He finds the fact that Romeo as entered their home after the years of conflict between their families unbearable and horrific, therefore threatens him in order to defend his family. This shows that Tybalt, like Benvolio is loyal to his family, therefore is prepared to `kill for the honour of [his] kin`. This shows dramatic actions stemming from the love of a family contrasting with Benvolio`s actions of love that are more reasonable. Another example of family loyalty is witnessed when Juliet is introduced in the play in act 1 s cene 3. She appears completely restrained by her mother and father and an unusual love is evident. Lady Capulet, Juilet`s mother appears less concerned with being a caring mother and more involved in keeping the reputation of the family intact but also marrying off her daughter to a respectable and wealthy man. This leads to the observer holding the knowledge that it is unlikely that Juliet would be loyal to her mother when a situation arises. This becomes apparent when Juliet chooses to marry Romeo, an enemy of her mother, father and family. Knowing that the families reputation is important to them Juliet also chooses to commit suicide condemning her families reputation due to the sin she commits. When it became popular knowledge that Tybalt was murdered by the hands of a Montague, Lady Capulet exclaimed, `for blood of ours, shed blood of a Montague. ` Showing that she is more inclined to feel anger over the loss of the family rather than morn for Tybalt. This represents false family love, she feels for herself due to her loss rather than the death of Tybalt to a Montague. Projecting that she has loyalty to herself, to make sure her reputation remains unaffected and that she remains wealthy, rather than to her family. This is contrasted with a more prominent parental figure of Juliet`s, the Nurse. The Nurse has been the main career of Juliet throughout her life taking the role of a caring surrogate mother. Juliet is comfortable with her and talks to her about most things and it becomes apparent that the nurse cares for Juliet abundantly. This is clear when Juliet takes the potion from the Friar and the Nurse finds her body in the morning laid on the bed. In a state of shock she repeats `O lamentable day†¦ Alack the day! `. The observer discovers here that their relationship resembles a mother daughter connection as the nurse curses the day of Juliet’s `death`. It is also clear that the Nurse treated Juliet with a playful approach calling her `lamb` and `ladybird`, these resemble childhood names that have continued to maintain the relationship between them also projecting a sense of familiarity with the Nurse through Juliet’s eyes leading the Nurse to be a character that Juliet can easily talk to. The difference between Juliet’s two contradicting mother figures shows different variations of family loyalty and contrast in Juliet’s attitudes towards love and family. Another example of family love is between Friar Lawrence and Romeo. Friar Lawrence acts as a patriarchal figure towards Romeo throughout the play. Romeo trusts the Friar enough to enquire about marriage with Juliet without worrying that he will tell someone. Although he is needed for the ceremony it is apparent that there is more to his choice than this, including the fact that he trusts him. When the Friar notices Romeo he shouts, `Benedicite! ` translated as `bless you`, this shows that he wishes good things to happen to Romeo and that he cares for him. Friar Lawrence could be classified as a surrogate father, he calls Romeo `†¦good son†¦` and as would happen in a conventional family he enquires about his life. This idea is exasperated by the fact that Romeo`s father is not seen throughout the play leading to two conclusions being met. One, that Romeo trusts the Friar more than his own father and that he is more important to his life than his biological father.

The Ways of Greenhouse Gases Reducing

The Ways of Greenhouse Gases Reducing Introduction Global warming is a global problem that has raised a lot of concern. This issue has attracted attention of many researchers with the aim of finding ways of address it. The environment is vital for human survival. Both plants and animals entirely depend on the environment for growth and development.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Ways of Greenhouse Gases Reducing specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Casper (2010, p. 94) argues that since the days of industrial revolution, the environment and its resources have greatly been threatened. Industries have been reported to affect the environment at a very high rate. This is because of the high levels of greenhouse gases emitted from these industries. This situation is worsened by the fact that now many nations are developing and there is a rising level of industrialization. The concentration of greenhouse gases in the environment is increasing on daily basis. Carbon sinks have been cleared with the increase of the high demanding population across nations. Epstein (1990, p. 121) points out that effects of global warming are evident and felt with serious damages to nations. For example, many nations are suffering from frequent floods, droughts, tornadoes, poor and unequal rainfall patterns, and many other effects resulting from global warming. Among the developed nations, the United States and China lead in emission of the greenhouse gases and hence frequently suffer from the effect of the same. The developing countries are equally emitting high levels of greenhouse gases in their quest to develop. These emissions however produced from different nations have a global impact. According to Ramseur and Yacobucci (2008, p. 112), the environment as said earlier is very useful for sustaining human life. For people to continue enjoying the environmental resources the environment should therefore be conserved and its resources harvested sustainabl y. This paper seeks to explore the ways in which greenhouse gases can be reduced to curb global warming. Discussion With an effort to address global warming, many suggestions and ways have been raised to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and avoid global warming are not a one man’s or one nation’s duty. There is need for nations to collaborate. A participatory approach where every member of the society is involved can be very effective. Many ways can be employed to reduce emission of greenhouse gases. The governments should enact and implement policies that are geared towards reducing emissions of the greenhouse gases. These policies should strictly encourage a Zero emission of greenhouse gases. If an industry has to emit either of the greenhouse gases, a fixed level of emission that is harmless to the environment should be stated.Advertising Looking for essay on environmental studies? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The government should ensure that such industries, companies, and businesses report publicly on their carbon emissions. This will make the companies to be extra careful not to emit or exceed the required emission levels. Low- carbon technologies should be encouraged in all sectors to reduce greenhouse gases emission. This may be achieved by the government offering some donations to its citizens to install low-carbon technologies like use of solar energy. A nation may also apply principles like the polluter pay principle where a company or an individual pays a certain fee for polluting the environment. Industries may be forced to pay equally to the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the environment. This will help in making the companies and the public to be more responsible and careful in handling their emissions and other wastes. According to Casper (2010, p. 78), Carbon sinks such as forests have been cleared for agricu ltural purposes to provide for the needs of the daily increasing population. Nations should create awareness to the public on the need to have small families. The importance of forests should as well be explained to communities. By so doing, these communities will consequently conserve the forests. This will highly contribute in reducing the concentration levels for greenhouse gases. There is need for nations to encourage companies and people within the communities to practice recycling and re-use of items. Things like polythene bags may be recycled. This reduces the accumulation of such polythene bags into the environment thereby reducing the amount of emissions when they are burnt as wastes in the environment. According to Ramseur and Yacobucci (2008, p. 78), there are many other ways although not put into consideration by many nations that can help in reducing the emission of greenhouse gases effectively. These may include holding energy management awards, rewarding companies wit h zero or less emission, promoting carbon-trading, rewarding communities with well-conserved forests among others. These factors motivates companies and communities to work hard towards ensuring that they do not ,engage in ,activities that in any way leads to the emission of greenhouse gases. All these factors when applied results to a greenhouse gases free nation, thereby curbing global warming and its impacts.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Ways of Greenhouse Gases Reducing specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Conclusion The discussion above clearly points out that environment is a source of livelihood for many lives. Reducing greenhouse gases is very important in ensuring that this environment is protected in order to ensure its sustainability. The greenhouse gases have serious negative consequences to the environment. The impact is long lasting and devastating. If not addressed properly, this issue may create a permanent negative impact on the environment. List of References Casper, J 2010, Greenhouse gases: Worldwide Impacts, Facts on File, New York. Software Architecture report - Essay Example This level of abstraction is called software architectural styles or patterns. These styles and patterns synonymously refer to a composition and arrangement of components and the way of interaction between these components (Bass, Clements, & Kazman, 2003, Section 5.9). This arrangement is in actual a generalization of the best practices adopted in specific problems. By identifying the style or pattern involved in a particular architecture, the software architects can immediately understand the basic working model of the intended system. Software architecture is a formal arrangement of integral elements/components of a system while architectural style or pattern is a generalization of the best practice solution that can be applied in a particular scenario. It represents of a  set of principles that provide an abstract framework of components, their types (whether a repository of computational component, etc.) their layout and relationships (e.g. input and output dependencies) and interaction mechanisms (e.g. events based, procedure calls, etc.) that all systems falling into a similar category can follow. Thus, architectural styles or patterns aid in partitioning a system and facilitate in reusing the pre-existing solution designs to solve the frequently occurring similar system formulation problems (Garland & Anthony, 2003, p. 171; Gomaa, 2011, p. 198). The problem and context of the selected architectural components aid in selecting a particular architectural style characterizing components and connectors (Gomaa, 2011, p. 205). In a style or pattern, components could be computational, memory related, managerial or a controller while the connector depicting interaction mechanisms between components could be procedure call, data flow, implicit invocation, message passing, shared data or instantiation. Section 2.1 to 2.10 provides a brief description of a few architectural styles and patterns (Taylor, Medvidovic, &

Geico Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Geico - Essay Example To avoid this problem, GEICO insurance company decided to eliminate brokers and agents and deal with the end users direct. GEICO decided to spend a little amount in dealing direct with the customers than using a lot of money by bringing in brokers. This is because the brokers will add in more money to gathers their needs. Dealing direct with the customer is better as a customer will be comfortable and he/she will afford the services offered by the company (Rosenbloom 87). This will enable the company to outweigh the competitors, at the same time retain its customers, and bring in more customers. In addition, the company will make a profit and will remain in business. GEICO insurance company advertises its products and services direct to the end user or customer. The company is advertising through the radio, television, and internet. State Machine Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

State Machine - Essay Example Suitable choice of semantics for state machines allows multiple machines to be composed in the description of a single object. State diagram can be used to graphically represent finite state machines. This was introduced by Taylor Booth in his 1967 book "Sequential Machines and Automata Theory". Another possible representation is the State transition table. The mealy model for a state machine is one in which the outputs are a function of both the present state and the input. It is a general model for state machines, and assumes that there are two types of inputs; clock inputs and data inputs. The clock inputs cause the state transitions and gate'' the outputs, (so the outputs are really pulse'' outputs; i.e., they are valid only when the clock is asserted). The data transitions determine the values of next-states and outputs. Essentially, the clock inputs control the timing of the state transitions and outputs, while the data inputs determine their values. In this model outputs are associated with the states of the device. In the Moore machine, the outputs are stable for the full time the device is in a given state. (The outputs are said to be level'' outputs, and are valid even when the clock inputs are not asserted.). Again, there are two types of inputs, clock inputs and data inputs. In this case, however, the clock inputs only directly enable the state transitions. ... In general, we can say that; it is possible to convert any Mealy type machine into an equivalent Moore type machine, and vice-versa. First, we must define what we mean for two state machines to be equivalent. Two state machines are said to be equivalent if they produce exactly the same output for all inputs. Consequently, to derive an equivalent Moore machine from a Mealy machine, it must be possible to guarantee that the two machines produce the same output after any arbitrary input string has been input. This can be done by splitting all the Mealy states corresponding to different outputs, and ensuring that these states are connected to next-states which correspond to equivalent states in the original Mealy machine. The Police and Crime

The Police and Crime History of Criminal Investigation: The investigation of crime involves the study of various facts and findings, with the intention of finding whether an individual is guilty or not, for an offence. This process involves the use of a variety of techniques, which includes interviews, interrogations, forensic analysis, etc (Fisher Fisher, 2012). The investigation of crime is a concept that has a long history, and the function of detectives was able to develop gradually. However, it is important to explain that, it is the CID who had the responsibility of investigating crime. This was a specialized unit, responsible for investigating crime, and could be found in all police stations in the United Kingdom (Beauregard and Martineau, 2014). However, the powers of investigators were ambiguous. This is because there wasn’t any law that was able to spell out the role of investigators, and the rights of the people under investigation (Rossmo and Summers, 2015). This was a major challenge to the investigatory process, basically because the detectives could breach on the rights of people, because of the absence of a clear guideline on how to investigate (Taylor, Fritsch and Liederbach, 2014). Furthermore, investigators had very limited training. This had an impact of negatively affecting the efficiency of their investigations, hence the results. It is because of these limited training, that the status of investigatory officers was able to rise up very slowly. Organizational Processes: Crown Prosecution Service: Until 1984, it was the police department that was in charge of the investigation of criminal activities. The introduction of the 1984, law of Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) is significant, because it was able to identify the role of the police officers, and the rights that the public had. This is with the intention of protecting the citizens from abuses by the police. Until 1986, it is the police who were responsible for investigating crime, and prosecuting crime. However, this responsibility and duties changed in the year 1986. This is basically because of the emergence of the Crown Prosecution Office. This came into being with the enactment of the 1985 Prosecution Offences Act. The Crown Prosecution Office has the responsibility of prosecuting every criminal charge, brought against an individual (Newburn, 2012). This office is very important because it ensures that the police would not be the prosecutors, as well as the investigators of a criminal offence. This helps in protecting the citizens from abuses by police officers, who may carry out inadequate investigation, and press charges with limited evidence (Carr-Hill Stern, 2014). The impact of this situation is that the police officers may prosecute an innocent person, or they may fail to get justice to the victim, because of the inability of successful prosecuting the case, leading to a conviction. The Crown Prosecution Service is therefore important, basically because it would ensure that the quality of investigation is high, and cases are brought to the courts, if there is sufficient evidence warranting their prosecution (Baker, 2013). This has therefore helped in solving issues pertaining to poor investigation of an offence. Volume Crimes: In as much as there is the existence of the crown prosecution service, it is very difficult to solve and investigate volume crimes (Beauregard and Martineau, 2014). These are the majority of offences that are committed in England and Wales. These criminal activities are very difficult to solve, hence on most occasions, their victims normally do not get justice. Because of their large number, the criminal department is overwhelmed in investigating these criminal activities. This means that there are no enough personnel who can help in investigating these criminal activities. This is a major challenge facing investigators (Lister, 2013). To solve on this situation, there is a need of hiring more personnel, and training them on the best methods of investigating this type of crime. Serious Crimes The investigation of serious crimes is also has challenges. The CID has a monopoly in this area, and it makes it difficult for other organs of the police force to demand for accountability in the manner which these criminal activities are investigated. Furthermore, the media has portrayed the investigation of these types of offences as glorious, and this limits the effectiveness of investigators. An example is the Sherlock Holmes series of investigations, where the media glorifies the activities of detective Holmes (Taylor, Fritsch and Liederbach, 2014). This is a misconception portrayed by the media. Risk Factors: Furthermore, the quality of investigation is affected by the risks that are placed on police officers to perform. This is in circumstances when there is a public outcry on the rise of insecurity in certain areas of the country. Too much pressure has the capability of affecting the quality of an investigation (Griffiths, 2014). There is also too much reliance on interviews and this is a challenge because people may lie while being interviewed. Furthermore, it is possible to categorize such kinds of evidence as hearsay by the courts. This means that they will not be admissible (Kassin et al, 2014). Investigators, also have a close relationship with criminals. This is basically because it is difficult to crack an underground crime organization without the help of criminals’ officers. This is unethical practice, because it is wrong to associate with people, that they are tasked to fight against. Detection Rates: Detection rates also present a challenge to investigation of crime. This refers to the criminal activities that have been successfully solved. This is always a political process, and the judges and the courts may be influenced. This is based on the perception of the society. Forensic Science and the Media: The emergence of the media has played a role in blurring reality, with fiction. This means that it has an influence in making some fictional activities to be reality, hence affecting the quality of investigation. Take for example, the investigative ability of Sherlock Holmes. He is a fictional character, depicted as being highly talented. Some of his skills are not realistic, and cannot be implemented. Furthermore, lack of high quality technologies plays a role in limiting the results of investigation. Debate arises in the United Kingdom, on the need of reviewing some cases that were prosecuted in 1980s, and early 1990s, with the use of technology, for purposes of solving them. Furthermore, because of inadequate skills, there is poor use of forensic technology, for purposes of determining the real culprit of a criminal offence. Poor communication of its use is also a factor affecting the quality of investigations. Conclusion There are a lot of challenges facing the investigations of criminal offences. As discussed earlier, one of the crimes that police are unable to investigate adequately are voluminous crimes. This is because of the lack of enough personnel, who can investigate these criminal activities. Furthermore, the monopoly of the CID over serious crimes makes it to be unaccountable to any policing department. In as much as these challenges exist, with proper reforms and policies, there is a possibility of overcoming them. Bibliography: BAKER, S. (2013). Review of Portrait of America :: essays research papers

Review of Portrait of America During the process of reading this compilation of works, Portrait of America, many different point of views were aired. The opinion or attitude on the subject was too tainted. The authors were very biased to their perception of the "story". This book could have been much more beneficial if the facts would have stayed to the straight and narrow. Only the detrimental facts needed to be applied to these chapters. For a history class, as broad as this, this book opened too many doors that could not be explained in as much detail as would be liked. Many of the authors enjoyed mentioning the most scandalous moments of the people's lives then dropped the fact without much support or follow through as to what happened to cause or end these events. Brief summaries only tease the mind, and with the course load of most students, there is hardly extra time to investigate the matter further in detail. For a class such as History 152, biographies and/or documentary style books are m ore worth the while of the student. For instance make a list of a selection of novels that could be read for the class, so that every student can then explore in depth what that student thinks is interesting. Although the book was teasing in nature the chapters did flow well and were easy to read. The procession of the chapters had wonderful transition as to not loose the student. While proceeding through this book there were several different reoccurring topics that appeared. This paper will discuss these two reoccurring topics: the civil rights movement and former presidents. The civil rights movement, by many people, is though to have happened during the 1950's and 1960's. The truth of the matter is that civil right has and always will be an ongoing issue for anyone who is not of color. The civil rights movement started when the black slave started arriving in America centuries ago. The civil rights movement is one of the most known about issues in American history. Everyone at some point in their life has studied this movement. This movement is particularly interesting due to the massive amounts of different stories and occurrences through the course of the movement. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a vital figurehead to this movement. He inspired many people who had lived their whole lives in the shadow of fear of change.
